Almost every medicine has mild, moderate to serious side effects
including Allopurinol – Zyloprim. Having thorough knowledge about
the likely side effects may help patient to be alert and avoid
serious consequences thereof. Side effects of some medicines may
occur instantly while some may develop in due course. If the patient
finds or experiences any unexpected symptoms or signs, he should
stop taking that medicine and contact his doctor on priority.
The most commonly reported side effects of Allopurinol – Zyloprim
could be some or all of the following: Diarrhoea, nausea,
drowsiness, stomach upset, increase in alkaline phosphates or
increased SGOT / SGPT as mild side effects while some of the adverse
effects can prove to be serious too. Such conditions include:
painful urination, blood accompanying the urine at times or for
prolonged phase, swelling of the patient’s lips or mouth, skin
rashes, loss of appetite or feeling fullness, irritation in the
eyes, itching sensation over the body, fever or high body
temperature, chills, sore throat and some uncommon signs of
infections, besides unexpected body weight loss.
Some more side effects or adverse effects other than listed above
may also be experienced in the event of which the patient should
immediately rush to his physician for necessary medical assistance.
There are cases wherein the patients have reported arthralgia,
cholestatic jaundice, eosinophilia as well as mild leukocytosis or
leucopenia. Also problems like headache, necrotizing, angiitis,
vomiting, intermittent abdominal pain, gastritis, dyspepsia,
neuritis, somnolence, peripheral neuropathy, loss of taste and renal
failure could be experienced.
