Working & Treatment of
Allopurinol - Zyloprim |
The pharmacology and usage of Allopurinol – Zyloprim is the
structural analog of the natural purine base hypoxanthine which is
used for averting gout and renal calculi because of either uric acid
or calcium oxalate as well as for treating uric acid nephropathy,
hyper-uricemia besides certain solid tumors. Also it is used for the
treatment of hyper-uricemia accompanied by primary or secondary
gout.
Allopurinol – Zyloprim slows down the enzyme xanathine oxidase by
preventing the conversion of the oxypurine hypoxanthine and
xanathine to uric acid. The drug also helps the absorption of
hypoxanthine and xanathine into DNA and RNA leading to further
decrease of serum uric acid concentrations. The drug is prescribed
for the treatment of acute and chronic gout and is used for avoiding
rather than treating gout attacks. The brand Zyloprim is produced by
using the generic drug called Allopurinol as its basic raw material
and is available in the dose sizes of 100mg, 200mg and 300mg tablet
forms.
The doctor prescribes the precise dose size based on certain
required pathological tests and examinations on the patient. Besides
its use in treating gout, the drug is also widely used for treating
cancer at the beginning of some drugs or chemotherapy. The vital
factor worth remembering for this medication is that the patient
should intake maximum fluids while on Zyloprim – Allopurinol
therapy. The drug works by preventing uric acid production which is
the waste product usually present in the blood as the result of
breaking down of purine. Excess levels of uric acids may cause
crystals forming in the joints which ultimately lead to gout – a
type of arthritis only.
